Louisiana Field Sampling Trip February 2017

Cheyanne Theis

From February 9th– 13th, four of us from the Shark Biology and Fisheries Science Lab traveled to Venice, Louisiana to collect shark samples for several different research projects on campus. This was a great opportunity to gather samples from upper-western region of the Gulf of Mexico for my feeding ecology study focusing on Spinner sharks (Carcharhinus brevipinna) and Blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus). Several people from Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries and NOAA were there to assist in the collection of samples and to help us network with local fisheries.  Being in the midst of the fishery operations taught us not about the daily tasks of the business but also some economic and policy aspects of state and federal fisheries.
